About event

Ballet in one act.
Libretto by Michel Fokine.

In 1910, Michel Fokine produced a one-act ballet with the music of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite “Scheherazade” for the Sergei Diaghilev company. The plot was based on one of the Arabian fairy tales from “One Thousand and One Nights” collection, which tells a story of why Shahryar had lost all hope for women’s fidelity.

The premiere took place during the “Russian Seasons in Paris” on the 4th of June 1910 and had phenomenal success. Fokine’s innovative choreography, exotic design by Léon Bakst, famous performers Ida Rubinstein (Zobeide) and Vaslav Nijinsky (The Golden Slave) – all made their contributions.

For quite some time “Scheherazade” was in Diaghilev’s company repertoire. Later on, it appeared in several theatres. In Soviet times, the ballet was banned for being somewhat too erotic. Only in the 21st century, we can finally see it in Ukraine.
