Laura Berman is an American arts manager, curator and dramaturg who has worked in Europe for 30 years. She was born in Boston in 1959 and completed her musical training at the Juilliard School as well as in Princeton and Bloomington, Indiana. A scholarship took her to Germany, where she first completed a degree in opera directing in Hamburg.
Laura Berman is known for her work at various theatres and opera houses, including the Theatre Basel, the Bregenz Festival, the Bavarian State Opera, the Wiener Festwochen, Vienna State Opera and Zurich Ballet. From 2019 through 2025, she was the general director of the Staatsoper Hannover.
Berman specialises in opera and music theatre in particular. She is a well-known figure in the performing arts and has made a significant contribution to the development of contemporary music theatre and opera.
