Summary

Prologue

Don Quixote is reading through the pages of the сhivalric romance books again and again. He is dreaming of having a life full of heroic deeds and glory, just like the heroes of his favourite books. With his servant Sancho Panza, he sets off to faraway lands in search of adventures.

Act 1

Scene 1

A holiday morning in sunny Barcelona. The people are getting ready for a corrida. Dancers entertain themselves with a Seguidilla. People from all over the city are gathering to have a glance at the festive preparations.

Young toreros, elegant peasants and Catalan cavaliers are all admiring the dance of charming Kitri, the daughter of the innkeeper Lorenzo. She, however, does not pay attention to anyone, for her heart belongs to the poor barber Basilio, who is also deeply in love with her. But Lorenzo does not like Kitri’s lover. He prefers the rich nobleman Gamache, and Lorenzo promised him his daughter.

Meanwhile, a real dance extravaganza unfolds on the stage: toreros, the street dancer, charming Mercedes and finally, Espada, the principal toreador – all of them capture people’s attention.

Don Quixote and Sancho Panza appear at the square. Lorenzo is welcoming the guests. Some of the young people are trying to make fun of Sancho Panza but Don Quixote is coming to the rescue. Seeing Kitri, the noble hidalgo mistakes her for beautiful Dulcinea, the lady of his heart, and invites her for a Minuet. Lorenzo, once again, is trying to convince Kitri to marry rich Gamache but she, in love with Basilio, does not want to hear anything.

Kitri and Basilio are running away. Lorenzo, Gamache and Don Quixote are going after them.

Scene 2

The lovers see a gypsy tavern on their way. Kitri and Basilio decide to mingle among friends inside.

As soon as they hide, Lorenzo, Gamache, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza enter the tavern. Despite the effort to conceal Kitri, the innkeeper finds her and announces her engagement with Gamache. Basilio is pretending to commit suicide. Kitri is asking Don Quixote to protect her and her lover. Don Quixote demands that Lorenzo gives his blessing to dying Basilio for marrying his daughter, and when he reluctantly agrees, the young man comes back to life smiling.

Scene 3

Having reunited the lovers, Don Quixote continues his adventure in search of Dulcinea. A long journey becomes a real challenge for the old hidalgo. Exhausted, he falls asleep.

In his dreams, the knight visits the kingdom of dryads. These unearthly creatures, one after the other, dance in front of him. Then, his imagination shows him his beloved Dulcinea, who looks so much like Kitri. Her image subtly flashes among dancing dryads and charms the knight even more. Desperate Sancho Panza, waking his master up, brings him back from the dream world, and they continue the journey.

Act 2

Everything is ready for the wedding of Kitri and Basilio at the castle. The whole of Barcelona is about to celebrate. The people’s favourite dancer makes all the young girls hold their breath. Young people inspired by the success of the principal toreador are dancing a captivating Fandango.

Don Quixote bestows his blessing on the couple. Kitri’s friends together with other young girls are preparing for the wedding ceremony. Passionate Grand Pas de deux becomes the culmination of the ballet.

About event

Ballet in 2 acts.
Based on an episode from the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes.

The world premiere: The Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow, December 14, 1869.
The first staging in The Odessa Opera and Ballet Theatre: February, 1933.
