About project

Summary

Act 1

Prologue

In a faraway land covered in snow lived a mighty Snow Queen. She wanted to create a magic mirror to dispel an evil spell. Forged by powerful trolls, however, it showed good things in an ugly way and made bad things seem beautiful.

The Snow Queen broke it, and it shattered into small pieces all over the world. Not one corner of the Earth remained untouched by the icicles. Not a single soul remained undamaged from their magical glare.

Scene 1

A winter wonder reigns in a small town. Children are having fun at the skating rink. They are riding sledges and playing snowballs, and their cheeks turn red from the frost.

The sun begins to go down, and happy children stop playing and rush to their warm homes.

Scene 2

A Christmas fairy tale came to Gerda’s room. Thanks to the girl’s parents, it is a true holiday. Her best friend Kaj comes to visit.

Suddenly, the boy notices a large shiny drop outside the window, instantly turning into an icicle. He opens the window and feels something sharp piercing his eye and heart. It was a fragment of the Snow Queen’s magic mirror. His heart turns into ice, and all pleasant things tend to annoy him. He makes fun of Gerda, and his words, as cold needles, hurt the girl.

In the street, where a blizzard rages, Kaj sees a charming woman in a snow-white dress. This is the Snow Queen accompanied by evil trolls. Having fallen under her spell, the boy forgets about Gerda. Like in a dream, Kaj sits in the Queen’s crystal sleigh, rising high into the sky.

Worried, Gerda runs outside, looking for her friend. Exhausted, she returns home and falls asleep by the warm fireplace.

Scene 3

Gerda falls into a wonderful dream: together with Kaj, they are in a blooming garden, where the air is full of flowers scent and the warmth of the summer sun.

Suddenly, a charming mistress of the garden appears. In a gentle voice, she offers the girl to stay in the enchanted place. Gerda wakes up feeling a flame of hope burning in her soul. Cold wind and snowy roads do not scare her. She courageously sets off on a journey.

Act 2

Scene 1

Through a dark forest, the path leads the girl to the Fairy Kingdom. In the darkness of the night, Gerda meets a raven who offers to take her to the palace.

The gate opens, and Gerda sees a Prince and a Princess running out to her in their pyjamas. Charmed by the girl’s courage and kindness, they offer her to stay. But Gerda remains adamant: she must find Kaj. The Prince and the Princess give her a warm fur coat to protect her from the winter cold as a farewell gift.

Scene 2

In the dark forest, Gerda is suddenly surrounded by robbers. A little robber, a cranky, cunning daughter of their old leader, demands the girl give her the fur coat. Gerda’s brave voice, however, touches her heart, and she decides to let the girl go and help her find Kaj.

Scene 3

Gerda continues her journey. The sky is covered with a whirlwind of snow, and a storm begins. Nevertheless, she feels that the icy realm of the Snow Queen is close ahead.

Preparations for Kaj’s coronation are being carried out inside the Crystal Palace. The Snow Queen wants this young man to stay in her kingdom forever.

Gerda bravely rushes into battle with the Snow Queen and her troll henchmen, but her strength is beginning to give out. Robbers and angels come to help the girl. Gerda begs Kaj for help, but he remains cold and indifferent. The girl starts to cry in despair. Her tears, warm and sincere, melt his ice-cold heart.

The power of Gerda and Kaj’s pure love destroys the Snow Queen’s spell. The palace begins to melt, and once seemingly impenetrable, ice walls dissolve in the sunlight. From now on, nothing will ever stop Gerda and Kaj on their way to happiness!
